The town is best seen on a walking tour. An additional point of interest in Christiansted is the St. Croix Archaeological Society Museum, Company St. (tel. 340/692-2365), a showcase of many ancient artifacts, some of which date from 4,000 years ago. Everything of value discovered on St. Croix is here, including a 1,000-year-old fertility amulet carved from a shell to a terra-cotta bowl from the 1400s that was once used to serve up offerings to the Gods by the Taíno Indians. Digs from previous cultures, including the Ortoiroid, Saladoid, Elenan Ostionoid, and Taíno tribes are displayed. All of these native Indians lived on St. Croix before the Columbus landing at Salt River in 1493. Charging no admission, the museum is open on Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
